Gori

In the heart of Georgia, there is a town. The name of this town is Gori. Meaning a hill, Gori actually has a big hill located in its center, and on this hill there is a huge medieval fortress. It has beautiful views on the horizon. According to a legend, this fortress was built by a Roman Caesar. He needed it to save his countless treasures. This is only a legend; however, in the medieval history of Georgia, the fortress of Gori was one of the most important strongholds in the area, mostly because of its strategic location. It was located at the crossings of important economic roadways, and its possession meant having political domination over the central part of Georgia. Today, two highways and one railway cross Gori. It is an important transportation hub and the administrative center of the Inner Kartli region.

What to See

In the vicinity of Gori, there are many places to visit. If you take the შ29 road from Tbilisi, it will take you to an ancient cave town. The name of this cave town is Uplistsikhe. It is one of the oldest structures in the world, dating back to the second millennium B.C. There are tens of caves in Uplistsikhe awaiting to be explored. Detailed information about Uplistsikhe can be read here.

There are many more monuments close to Gori. There are both natural and historical sights that you can enjoy. You can visit the ethnographic museum of Gori, Atenis Sioni, Nadarbazevi Lake, and many more; however, none of these places are as famous in Gori as the museum of Joseph Stalin. Many people know that one of the biggest dictators of the 20th century was born in this small town. The most famous Georgian man, as he is known by locals, has a museum built under his name in Gori. The museum consists of a small house where he was born and spent 4 years of his early life, his train, and a museum building with more than 60000 artifacts from his life. After the war of 2008, the museum administration added a small room to the main building, which is full of letters from the victims of the Great Repression that happened in 1930s in the Soviet Union. Small cabinet, where Soviet officials used to take instant decisions over some small crimes and against political opponents. The execution cell is giving every visitor the horrifying feeling that prisoners had while spending the last minutes of their lives. However, in Stalin’s museum in Gori, all of this is organized for visitors. If you ever wanted to see buildings where executions used to happen in reality, you can find many such places in different cities in Georgia. One of the buildings is located just several meters away from the modern parliament building in Tbilisi. This is, at first glance, a very usual block of flats in the Sololaki Area. On Pavle Ingorokva Street, the basement of this building was used by Cheka, and it was a place where they brought the lives of thousands of innocent people to completion.

The exhibition in Gori is quite interesting, especially for those who are curious about the history of the 20th century or about unknown parts of the life of the dictator.
