Ananuri Fortress

Visiting Georgia? It is necessary to see the beautiful medieval fortress of Ananuri because you will not only get visual satisfaction but also learn a lot about the history of Georgia.

Ananuri Fortress is a late medieval fortress located on the Military Highway of Georgia. Its location is the main reason for its popularity. It is located right at the bottom of the mountains, full of vegetation, and in front of the conjoining place of mountain rivers that flow into Jinvali dam afterward. The landscapes bring people here, but we cannot forget about the historical importance and cultural value of the fortress. In the early 16th century, the Aragvi dukes built the fortress, and it soon became their residence. The fortress was constantly rebuilt until the late 17th century. It has three churches, a fortified wall, a water reservoir, a secret tunnel, and other defensive constructions that represent good examples of Georgian medieval architecture. It must be said that in those times, the place chosen for the construction of the fortress was strategically important. Furthermore, it was located at the crossroads of several critical routes coming from the north and the central parts of the country. The walls of the main cathedral of Ananuri hold interesting information about its construction. The inscription mentions the name of Qaikhosro Baghsarashvili as the builder of the cathedral. Ananuri fortress represented one of the main strongholds of Georgia for centuries, mostly because of its location and construction technique. King Erekle II mentions Ananuri among the seven biggest strongholds in the country.
