Zugdidi, the administrative center of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region, is located 330 km from Tbilisi. With a population of 103,260, Zugdidi is not one of the biggest cities in Georgia; however, it is the historical center of the province of Samegrelo. The area of Zugdidi had been settled since the early Bronze Age. In the 16th century, Samegrelo Principality was one of the strongest among other principalities in Georgia. It reached its peak during the reign of Levan II Dadiani. It was exactly Levan Dadiani who built Dadiani Palace in the 17th century. Dadiani Palace is a historical-ethnographic museum and a very popular destination for travelers. Its garden is a favorite pastime destination for locals. Samegrelo Principality existed until mid-XIX c., when the Russian Empire finally annexed it.
Zugdidi is an important transportation hub in the country. Roads leading to Svaneti, Abkhazia, and the Black Sea start from Zugdidi. Zugdidi is connected to Tbilisi and Batumi by railway as well. Small minibuses also travel to Zugdidi from the bus station in Didube, Tbilisi.
With a long and rich history, beautiful nature, and a number of historical monuments, Zugdidi is a popular destination. Dadiani Palace, the Botanical Garden of Zugdidi, and Kolkheti National Park are a few places on the list of the travelers.
