Winter wonderland for anyone? No, it is not Lapland, and yes, it is Georgia. We don’t have a Santa Claus, but we have reindeer, lots of snow, and small, cozy wooden houses with fireplaces. We also have Saint Basil, Mekvle, Gozinaki, and many others that make Guruli New Year unique and very special. This is right! We are speaking about the west part of Georgia and a region called Guria—the most unexplored part of the country where you won’t see many visitors from abroad.
340 km west of Tbilisi, at 2050 meters above sea level, is the famous and beloved resort of Bakhmaro. Bakhmaro has a special location. It is in a basin surrounded by spruce and Nordmann fir trees; additionally, this is a place where mountain and sea air merge together. All of this creates a special environment. Bakhmaro is famous for its winter, but the summer can be even more popular here for a very simple reason. The lack of infrastructure makes it difficult to access Bakhmaro in the winter. The most determined travelers, however, are rewarded with local hospitality, a nature of unique beauty, and a very real winter wonderland. Bakhmaro is not less attractive in the spring and summer. Here on the hill of the “Sunrise”, visitors like to enjoy mesmerizing dawns when the sun is rising from the clouds.
Speaking of the infrastructure of Bakhmaro, there are wooden cottages; however, there is no water supply system. There are small local shops and unstable electricity. Travelers might need to bring water from a nearby stream.
If you like places that are beautiful yet unknown to many, this is the place for you. So don’t wait any longer, because the winter wonderland of Georgia is waiting for you!
